Photographic portrait of Sir Frederick Stern in uniform from the Journal of the RHS. Sir Frederick Stern was a merchant banker and at one time Assistant Private Secretary to Prime Minister Lloyd George. He travelled to the Himalayas with Reginald Farrer in 1914. In 1909 he aquired the garden at Highdown in Sussex, publishing 'A Chalk Garden' in 1960 about its development. An RHS Committee and Council member he received the Victoria Medal of Honour in 1940.
